Rachel-DixonI love mortgages. I love them so much that I’ve actually been in the industry since October 1988, starting my career at the age of 16.

During this time, I learned a lot and saw how the industry is changing for the better.

When I started my own business 17 years ago after leaving a large corporate organization, I found a small office and created a website where I could sell my services.

Definition

It was tough at times, especially during the 2008 crash. However, I was determined, I had a fire in my stomach, and I wanted to succeed. Nothing could stop me.

Self-employment can be solitary, so it’s always a good idea to connect with other consultants.

I have made a few mistakes along the way, but I have learned and grown to never make them again.

When I took the jump, I was the mother of two little boys. It was hard to balance motherhood and full-time work, but determination and very little sleep got me through it.

In 2006, there were few female consultants in this industry. I have been to many events and have been mistaken for someone’s personal assistant several times.

These days I have a whatsapp group with other mortgage advisors in my area.

Fast forward to 2023 and it will be great to see more equality in the industry – women are making successful careers in this field.

Simple advice

To all beginners who wish to enter this world, my advice is simple:

  • At the first meeting with a client, engage him, look into his eyes and shake his hand. Smile and listen. Listening is the most important; it shows that you are interested in your client and it will set you apart from other consultants, trust me.
  • To be active. Read industry news to make sure you are fully aware of the market you are in.
  • Make sure you are there for your customers throughout the process and will be there for them in the future. But never over-promise and always be honest with your customers.

These days I have a whatsapp group with other mortgage advisors in my area. If I’m having a bad day or stuck on one of the criteria, it’s great to have someone to talk it over with.

It’s nice to see more equality in the industry – women are making successful careers in this field.

Sometimes working alone can be solitary, so it’s always a good idea to connect with other consultants.

I think that to be a successful consultant, you need to take time for yourself every day. For me, it’s the balance of life and it’s non-negotiable.

Restart business

Today I run a very successful mortgage advisory firm with a lot of repeat business where my new clients tend to be referred by others.

Read industry news to make sure you are fully aware of the market you are in.

After 35 years, I still have a burning desire to help people, and I still enjoy the challenges I face every day.
