On Tuesday, officials said a missing hiker was found dead in a New York state nature reserve after a three-day search.

On March 11, a 45-year-old man from Brooklyn went on a solo hike in the Mohonk Wildlife Sanctuary, but did not show up for work two days later, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) said.

Officials said he was last heard talking to his daughter on the phone before heading to the Bontiku cliff area.

The New York State Police found the missing hiker’s car in the Spring Farm parking lot around 11:30 p.m. March 14.

The discovery kicked off a three-day search involving state police, 10 DEC forest rangers, Mohonk Wildlife Sanctuary Patrol Rangers, Sam Search and Rescue and Marbletown Rescue.

The agency said the recent snowstorm has exacerbated the already difficult conditions faced by search and rescue teams in the area’s steep and rocky terrain.

Around 10:15 a.m. Friday, searchers found the backpack and mobile phone of the missing hiker at the foot of a 50-foot cliff.

About six hours later, teams found the hiker’s body about 400 feet from the alleged crash site, officials said.

No details about how the traveler allegedly fell off the cliff or how his body ended up hundreds of feet from the scene were immediately released.
