CITIES CITIES – HCM City launched its first Việt Nam Bánh Mì (Vietnamese Sandwich) Festival yesterday at the District 1 Youth Culture House to promote the traditional dish to locals and tourists.
This is the first event of its kind in Vietnam, featuring 120 stalls from leading bakeries, restaurants and food vendors from across the country, as well as foreign companies.
This is expected to attract around 50,000 people to enjoy the famous dish and learn about its history.
Visitors can see and enjoy a wide selection of Vietnamese banh mi with various fillings, including vegetarian ones, as well as other pastries and sweets.
Chok Ahn, 21, arrived early and told Việt Nam News that he liked the atmosphere of the festival.
He said, “Banh mì has been an integral part of my life, along with phở (beef noodle soup) and bún bò Huế (beef noodle soup Huế). Phở is usually the center of attention and bang mi seems to be “too modest”. The festival provides a great opportunity to prove yourself as a bang mi.”
The 27-year-old Tu Thoo attendee added that she first learned about the festival from a Facebook post.
“The scale of the event amazes me! Later, I will definitely bring my foreign friends to taste the signature Vietnamese dish,” she said.
German citizen Lothar Schreiner added: “We love bread, so we love sandwiches. In Vietnam, banh mi is very tasty, everyone likes it, and so do I.”
In addition to food-related events, it also hosts musical performances, a conference on the history and development of banh mi, and an awards ceremony for the best long-standing bakery brands that have existed in Vietnam for over 50 years. as well as other exhibition events.
The festival is organized by the city’s tourism association HCM and the city’s tourism department and will run until the end of April 2.
Trun Thanh Hui, a member of the organizing board, said, “Through this festival, the organizers want to expand the meaning of banh mi to spread it among friends from all over the world. From there, they learn more about Vietnam and help tourism flourish after a long period of restrictions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Through this program, young people can start businesses to produce new and more diverse types of bread.”
Over the years, Vietnamese banh mi has been gaining popularity among foreign visitors as one of Vietnam’s specialties and was even included in the Oxford English Dictionary in 2011. VNS
