Just Media and The Real News Network are joining forces to provide aspiring journalists in Baltimore, especially young Baltimoreans of color, with more opportunities to cover the local criminal justice system by building on the system’s impact on their own communities.
Who should report police work and mass arrests? Who has a platform to highlight the impact of this incarceration system on black communities in Baltimore and the alternatives these communities represent?
This fellowship will equip young journalists, especially journalists of color, with the interpersonal and professional communication skills necessary to succeed in the professional journalism environment. Our curriculum focuses on bringing attention to their messages and engagement with their communities as it relates to criminal justice reform.
We are pleased to announce our POWER Scholarship. As part of this paid 3-month cohort, fellows will receive comprehensive journalism training, mentorship, community building opportunities, and support to publish their articles in partner publications.

Partnership terms: The scholarship will run from June 2023 until mid-August 2023.
Reporting focus: This year’s cohort will focus on criminal justice issues affecting the Baltimore area, including topics such as police misconduct, youth criminalization, over-reliance on pre-trial detention, racial and economic bias against those who are harassed and incarcerated, and – urgent damage to communities by prison systems. We will also help fellows tell the stories of communities and politicians working to change the status quo—by reducing harm, ending violence, and ultimately fighting for alternatives to police and imprisonment as key social and economic interventions.
Who has the right: The fellowship is open to aspiring American writers aged 18 to 25 who are connected to communities affected by prison and police issues. Young writers of color and those with direct experience in the criminal justice system are strongly encouraged to apply.
Our ideal candidate:
- Students, graduates, recent graduates, or graduate students with previous journalism experience or an interest in storytelling.
- Age from 18 to 25 years
- Relevant to communities affected by prison and police issues in Baltimore.
- She has experience writing articles and is interested in issues related to criminal justice.
- Open to growth, feedback and learning
- Has a passion for community-based reporting methods
- Proven teamwork experience and self-confidence
Preferred Qualifications:
- Previous editorial experience in a student or professional newsroom
- Enrolled in journalism program
- In line with or associated with local or national movement groups
- We strongly encourage people of color, women, LGBTQ+, and people with disabilities to apply.
Scholarship Benefits:
- The $1,000 scholarship is paid in two installments in June and August, in addition to any fees offered by The Real News Network and partner publications.
- Comprehensive and ongoing political education, editorial training and mentoring
- Support the publication of articles through The Real News Network website and local and national partner publications.
- Media training at The Real News Network studio in downtown Baltimore and co-working (if desired) during the internship.
- Opportunities to build relationships with local groups, professional mentors and other young writers.
- Access to a growing network of Just Media alumni and reporting resources
Expectations:
- Participate in weekly Tuesday evening training sessions and regular follow-up calls to Just Media staff.
- Suggest, report, write and publish at least one journalistic article about nominated journalists.
- In general, expect to devote an average of 5-10 hours per week to scholarships.
