The woman who shot killed three children and three adults at an elementary school in Nashville on Monday before being killed by police, officials said.

Speaking to reporters, Nashville police spokesman Don Aaron said police received a call about the shooter at 10:13 a.m. at The Covenant School, a church-run private Presbyterian elementary school that has preschool through sixth grade. When they arrived, the police heard gunfire on the second floor, and when they entered that floor, they saw a woman shooting.

According to Aaron, the officers engaged her, and the responding officers mortally wounded her. He said the shooter “looked” like a teenager and was armed with two machine guns and a pistol. According to him, the shooter entered the school through a side entrance and went from the first floor to the second.

“By 10:27 the shooter was dead,” Aaron said.

He added that the three adults killed were employees, and all three children who died had gunshot wounds.

The school has about 200 students, and according to Aaron, 42 employees were present at the time of the shooting.

The killings come as communities across the country are recovering from an outbreak of school violence, including last year’s elementary school massacre in Uvalde, Texas; the first grader who shot his teacher in Virginia; and last week’s shooting in Denver that injured two administrators.

The Nashville victims were pronounced dead upon arrival at Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital and Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

On Monday morning, police officers with rifles, heavy body armor and hard hats could be seen walking around the school parking lot and around the grassy perimeter of the building.

Josen Reodika heard police sirens and fire engines outside her office building. When her house was closed, she took out her phone and recorded what was happening.

“I thought I would just see it on TV,” she said. And right now it’s real.

According to the school’s website, Covenant School was founded as a ministry of the Covenant Presbyterian Church in 2001. The school is located in the affluent Green Hill area south of downtown Nashville, close to the city’s top universities.
